Cosplay question

Okay, I’m a newbie to cosplay, so I don’t know these things:

Do I need to use a wig? I mean, in this case, I’d be essentially buying a wig my exact same cut and color. However, the cosplay blogs I read strongly recommend using a wig. Is there a specific reason for this?

That sounds really ridiculous. Why waste money on a wig if you don’t need one?

Personally, I’m always a fan of natural hair over wigs. I mean, sometimes wigs work really well, and sometimes you pretty much need a wig, but I’d say if you can pull off not using a wig, I’d say go for it.

I have actually never used a wig. Of course, I’m also a person who has cut and coloured my hair specifically for the purpose of cosplay, so I’ve been able to do a few different things with it. You might not be able to pull that off, depending on how willing you are to change your hair. But if your current hair is basically exactly the same as your costume hair, you’re set.

I’d also venture to say that, honestly, the majority of people I’ve seen doing cosplay have used their own hair. So the blogs you’re reading may just be being perfectionists or elitists or trying to set some kind of standard, but most people wouldn’t actually care.

  9. taykash said: it’s not necessary if the style isn’t an outrageous one that can’t actually be done with your own hair (like most anime, video games, etc.) so you’re in the clear without buying one, I think :)
